Hey Dreads!!!

Congrats on the "sub-slam".....LOL!!! I just like getting all three species in one day, and it might come in handy for the Kayak Classic!! Good job!!

Did you figure out the FF/DF/GPS yet?? I could come in VERY handy for trips to ATL and GA in deepers and unknown waters!!
Good report....JYJ

While what islander1225 did with that gut hooked fish may sound 'correct', it was illegal and he should have cut the line and released the gut hooked fish. FWC is now actively monitoring our forums and we work with them to report violators and their contact info. If you follow the law you have nothing to worry about.

An ARC dehooker goes a long way to helping release gut hooked reds.

Just read Mikes comments  While his is correct about being legal think some good sense gets overlooked. If you already have one in the box/stringer and you gut catch another, that would count as two fish in your possession. If the FWC were to pull up with your two fish doubt they would believe your "story" about the gut catch fish and that you were going to give one of them away

On the otherhand, if you already have one on the stringer (and can't be released) and you catch another that you know is going to go belly up because of the way it is caught, it makes common sense to go ahead and keep the fish. Giving it away to someone who has had a bad day seems to be a simple and right thing to do solution.

sorry to say.... Mike is correct. Alex don't think you need to be worried about being reported to the FWC. We all know your intent was good and that you strictly follow the rules

I agree Jerry, and my point wasn't to call Alex out - he is the furthest thing from a poacher or someone who intentionally disregards the laws - I just wanted to point out that FWC doesn't really play judge either - they just enforce the law.

You wouldn't believe the stories they get from folks that violate the laws intentionally. And while I agree with the gut hooked fish principal of 'what if the fish will die anyway', if the law were to allow for that you would have folks with coolers of 40 gut hooked rat reds.

'Common sense' and following the law are 2 different things. If you choose to go the 'common sense' route be ready for a citation.

KayakMike is absolutely correct (as usual) and I called his attention to that post with a PM.....

Alex...we are not "busting your chops" but we need to constantly emphasize following the Florida Fishing Regulations, especially with the dozens (hundreds!!) of newbies we get in here!!
JohnYaksJax

PS: If you cannot get the hook out EASILY....LEAVE IT ALONE!! Don't do any further damage, just cut the line close to the hook and leave it inside the redfish..or other saltwater species also....the MORTALITY RATE from gut hooked fish is actually not very high, and the hooks rust out or are expelled or encapsulated, and the fish survives!!
Good scientific answer to the old question about gut-hooked fish:

Oh not a problem guy i understand, and just to clarify my post from earlier a little bit more is that i had another person with me and i had 2 reds in the cooler already, i then preceeded to catch the gut hooked fish, there were two guys in a tandem about 25 yards from me that were about to call it a day and had a crappy one at that so i that is when i gave them the red i actually kept the gut hooked one and gave them one we had already caught. needless to say i will be more careful next time, I follow the rules verfy firmly and def with reds, once again thank you for the heads up mike, it is info i will always know now.

Now lets go catch some fish.

P.S. i went today and went strictly catch and release lol.

Alex

I caught a Red once that was pushing a jighead, from the opposite end of his mouth, the hook was gone, it was just the lead head.....................

what's the procedure for releasing/catching seagulls? Yesterday when I was retrieving a line, one grabbed a shrimp on one of my jigheads and got the line wrapped around his leg! What screams that bird made! I tried to shake the line off to no avail and cut the line....the bird flew away in despair with the jighead and shrimp hanging from his leg....
