Me, Joe/Ga, Skitterdone, Bruce, and MarkBob all hit the Jekyll flooded grass at high tide this morning, in hopes of Redfish...

I actually stuck to the fly rod the first hour and a half, trying a spoon fly and a copper colored toad fly. No bites, but the casting went well...

By the two hour mark, the fly rod was stowed, and I had the baitcaster in hand, throwing the Redfish Magic, DOA CAL paddle tails, and a Gulp Jerk Shad.

Caught this guy on the Jerk Shad... :x

Had one other good bite, that pulled hard one time, and cut me off clean...

That's it, other than chasing this guy around trying to get a nice picture. He wasn't too co-operative. Shy, I guess. A nice 7-8 footer.

We got checked out by the DNR, and for once, I had everything I was supposed to have...

Knocked it off and went our seperate ways about 1115.

Fishing's gotta improve...

I really had high hopes for this trip. I had heard so much about the good Red Fishin' in the grass on flood tides here. SKITTERDONE and I have been planning this trip for nearly a month. Why didn't we catch Reds? After discussing this at great length, I think we didn't catch Reds because we didn't have the JYJ Krab-Ka-Bobs (patent pending)! I threw everything in my arsenal at them. I even cheated by tippin' with Fish Bites and dead shrimp. Maybe next time!
It was amazing how far inland we were able to travel. At one point, I think I was nearly a quarter of a mile from the ICW. Here's some pics that I took:

Off in the distance, you can see SKITTERDONE and MarkBob.

One more pic. I took this pic to show the snails clinging to the grass. However, they didn't show up like I thought they would; but the picture is kinda unique. If you look near the center, there is something that looks like it could be a reflection of a bird flying overhead. I wonder if it was a bird? Kewl, huh?!

Hmm, maybe it's because you guys didn't try bait. I always just use a shrimp under a popping cork there. ;)

If you EVER see me in posession of a popping cork, hell will have frozen, the water will have turned to wine, hurricanes will spin clockwise, and your wristwatch will be running backwards...

I don't care if I NEVER catch another fish...

Okay folks, here you have it. Railroader's report on using arti's and my experience in the same spot using a popping cork ending up with one slot red and two overslot. You decide...

Anybody can FEED a redfish, Bill. It's like old women on park benches throwing bread to the pigeons...Sure, they'll eat, but not much sport in it.... :pottytrain2:

I'd much rather FOOL one, than feed ten....:pirate:

When we going fishin' again, so we can continue this ongoing debate in person???  :boxing:

Rob, most definitely! :thumbleft: And you know this ongoing debate will never end and will always provide plenty of laughs. :) I've just come to the realization that I'd just rather use the real thing than an expensive imitation of it. ;)

Thanks for the post and some REALLY neat pix....that one of the grass taken by Joe/GA is kinda psychedelic...did Peter Maxx paint it??

WTG Rob for at least giving the longrod a shot....I need to do that again soon....someday...

Looks like a tuff day of fishing and catching to me...it looks WINDY, and the high tides require skills that I guess I don't possess yet!!
Ya look at those pix and see literally THOUSANDS of acres of water and grass that the reds can be feeding and hiding in....and for me finding them in all that water is just hunt and miss unless you see a tail waving at you, or hear one slurping on those snails on the weeds and you can track him down by sound.
Very tuff fishing!!
Congrats on getting out there tho!!

When I do the flooded grass fishing I use a gold spoon and ONLY cast when i see tail. I will literally stand there for 20 min straight, in hopes of a tail popping up. I've had pretty good success doing it that way.
