If you manage to get tangled in one of these things while you are overboard, you might be in trouble.

Two more words for yakin'. BE CAREFUL.

The mono leash works really well. I agree with GaFisher about the sleeves at 400 lb. Also, no need to boil them for five minutes, stick the dowel in the microwave for about 30-50 seconds on high and then hit the cold water. Works just as well. Just be careful as the dowel gets very hot so use a hot pad.............................ck

Hey all,
I have been browsing this site for a while but never replied, but here goes. I had been looking at these leashes for a while then decided to try and make my own. The only problem was finding 300-600#test fishing line here in Asheville,NC. So I racked my brain for about a week (surprisingly w/o side effects) and went to Lowe's and bought a small roll of weed eater line. It comes in a couple sizes, colors, length and is much cheaper than "fishing line". Best of all is that it worked. I have four leashes now that work great for less than 5 bucks each.

Tried this, boiling is more consistent. Microwave ones came out uneven and ugly. Probably just me but the boiling worked better for me.

I also make these in 200 and 400 lb. I bought a huge roll of 400 lb at the Fla Sportsman Fishing show - one of those booths with odds and ends under the table - I think it was 100 yds for $2. The only thing I do differently is cinch the end down tight on the carabiner before crimping - I find it easier to handle. I also remove from boiling salted water (higher boiling point) put under running cool water for a minute, then pop it in the freezer.

I guess there's a bunch of ways of getting it hot then cold. If it works, it works!

A little update. Be careful if you attach these things to your body. Make sure you can release them in an emergency. You dang sure can't break them.
