Gulf Trip On A Windy Saturday
I don't post a fishing report often here but I do fish every weekend in the Gulf as it's closer to where I live and usually do well when I go. Seems like I do a lot better than my Jax trips, but I'm sure that comes with frequency and knowing what works where you fish. I just don't fish the Jax area ...

Re: Need Rod & Reel Recommendations
I just picked up a Lew's SSG300 series reel. Weighs 9.1 ounces (specs), not sure what the drag # is. It has 10 bearings, so it's nice and smooth for an "economy" reel at $49.00. I put #20 braid on it and I'll see how it does this weekend down by the 206. It'll be paired with a Berkley Lightning Rod...

Re: Need Rod & Reel Recommendations
Just realized I didn't help with all your questions. I would recommend 20 pound braided line. Use a 15-20 pound leader that is at least a couple of feet long. An ideal rod length is a 7 footer as it helps to cast a little further than a 6.5 foot one. But if you get those Vortex rods, they will be 6....

Re: Need Rod & Reel Recommendations
I'm looking for a spinning reel. As far as cost I would say most economical but, if I had to out a dollar amount my max is $150. I fish with Penn and Shimano reels. The Penn reels are for heavier applications. My every weekend reels are the Shimano Sedona 3000FE. It retails for $69.95 and you shoul...

Re: Need Rod & Reel Recommendations
What reel(s) do you recommend? Size? Line? What rod(s) do you recommend? Length? Intracoastal kayak fishing for reds, trout, flounder, etc. How much you want to spend for the rod and reel? That will help folks give you some suggestions as the cost can be a wide range depending on who responds. The ...

Re: 4/1/17 Got Skunked
We fished in the Gulf this past Sunday and while the conditions seemed perfect, we didn't get normal results. Managed 22 fish between the two of us with an early 23 inch red that was the biggest catch on top water. I do believe the lunar phase and the barometer were key factors in the bite not being...

I heard that as well. We have one here in Valdosta. Will have to keep an eye out to see if it closes or if they have some great clearance deals.

Re: Quality inshore rod/reel combo
I fish the Gulf primarily with topwater and twitch/jerkbaits. Usually jigs with soft plastics/Gulp are my last resort when the other 2 methods aren't producing. I have fished all day on just topwater and caught several dozen trout. The key for me has been the weight of the setup. I started out with ...

Re: Quality inshore rod/reel combo
Asking what rod/reel combo to purchase for $400 is like asking someone what kayak to recommend. Let us know what type of fishing you want to do with the new rod/reel setup. That would probably help with the answers. You stated you have a Stradic and 2 Battle IIs. Both are great reels. Just tons of r...

Re: Need a new rod...
If you're using a 2500 size reel, those Gander Mountain Vortex rods that were mentioned would work great. 6.5 foot rods. I use 2 on my Shimano Sedona 3000 reels and love them. Gander Mountain had them on sale before Christmas for under $13 each. They are on sale right now for $20. 1 year warranty. H...

My friends are recommending the following places: Fontainebleau State Park, Mandeville Grand Isle State Park (Close to Fouchon and Leevile) Can fish the Gulf side or behind the island Pointe Aux Chenes Kayak Rentals - has a house boat, camping spots, kayak launches and phenomenal fishing Hope this h...
