Guana Lake 4- August 2019

For what it's worth, the lake is back up to usual levels - actually saw a 4 foot depth in there this morning. Caught a few small specks and short reds, nothing worth photographing or bringing home.

Re: Guana?

Was there Saturday morning. Launched at the dam. Water marginally higher than in past weeks - probably all rainfall. Saw some 3 foot depths in places. Caught 5-6 redfish, all shorts. A few trout, one or two keepers. Most hits within 1/2 mile of the dam. With the low water, most of the east side is V...

Re: Guana River - SML Drawdown

Response from the FWC, received this morning: From Cheryl Pinkerton, FWC NE Region, Wildlife and Habitat Management Lake Ponte Vedra is currently being drawn down in preparation for repairs to the Guana Dam structure on the south end of the Lake. This year’s draw down started earlier and will result...

Re: Guana River - SML Drawdown

Frank - i have fished there twice this year since the drawdown. I have a Hobie as well. The eastern part of the lake is too shallow for the drive unless you are OK with paddling or wading occasionally. The western section is 18" to 30" of water. Fishable, but you need to be careful. The fish were bi...

Re: Guana River - SML Drawdown

I tried to contact the folks responsible to get some information on the drawdown plan. First I contacted the GTR staff - they referred me to the FWC. I was told the FWC manages the water level in the Guana River Wildlife Management Area. I sent the FWC an email request, got a "we will contact you sh...

Re: Guana River - SML Drawdown

Yep, I was there Sunday as well, water at least 18-24 inches lower than usual. A LOT of kayaks on the water - the Heroes on the Water group had a mass outing - perhaps 25 kayaks or more. They do great work, but it was crowded - and shallow.

Re: Will color of Kayak affect fishing quality?

Let me re-phrase your question - what color is easier for the FWC or USCG to see if they are conducting a search for you. Or for a power boater to see? Answer is yellow or orange. The fish don't care. See my avatar - I have flown SAR over the ocean looking for people in rafts, etc. Yellow or orange ...

I almost always see the big ones on the west side of Guana lake. I don't worry about them but then I follow all of the JYJ guidelines...

Re: First time at Guana; Have a few questions

I have fished the Guana lake area quite a bit. I think the schools of trout and reds follow the mullet around and so there is never one "best" spot. That said, I have had good luck with trout on the west side where it is slightly deeper. Typically, I will slowly troll a Storm 3" swimbait - pearl or ...

Re: Ponds at my house | Small mouth bass and a big miss on c

I have a small retention pond in the back as well - plenty of bluegill, small cats, shiners and small LMB's, plus some really annoying turtles. I chuck a lure out there most days to get my fix and to get outside. But yesterday afternoon, I hooked a lunker - easily 3x bigger than any LMB so far. Big ...

Re: Need some input on Ocean Kayak Prowler 13

The Ocean Kayak Prowler 13 is an excellent boat - the hull is fast, stable and tracks well. It is a very well designed fishing kayak. I bought a Prowler 13 when i started kayak fishing in 2005 - and still have it. As I recall, it cost $799 in 2005. It would be a worthwhile upgrade from anything 10' ...

Re: Moving to Jacksonville

I have made the move over from Pensacola and was able to get my kayaks over here - I am ready to check out the fishing. I live in Mandarin and am looking for some good newbie (to Jax) recommendations. I was thinking about trying the Guana lake area this weekend... Any tips are much appreciated. Do y...

+1 on the moving from Pensacola - I am moving to Jax next month from Pace and will be looking to get the yak wet as soon as possible.
