Re: Dutton Island 8/18

Went out this morning with the intention of getting a couple hours in before the rain started. Six hours later, I was sunburnt and still hadn’t seen a drop of rain. Caught several barely-too-small reds, a couple very small ones, and a 22” one that went in the cooler. Also caught a lady fish and a s...

Re: Is a depth finder worth it?

I appreciate the additional info and ideas. I think I’m going to hold off until (if?) I get a better and more adaptable kayak. My current yak (Ocean Kayak Tetra Angler 12) is capable and is serving me well, but doesn’t have much space to add accessories. I also worry about the stability of it, and r...

Oak Harbor 8/4

Launched at Oak Harbor this morning at low tide and fished Cemetary Creek for a couple hours, picking up only a small red. Moved back to Garden Creek for another three hours, picking up a small flounder and a slightly undersized red. Very few bites, and didn’t see a single red tailing or busting bai...

Re: Is a depth finder worth it?

Thanks for the info, guys. I’ve pretty much concluded that the benefits won’t outweigh the cost at this point. I think side scan is the way to go when fishing shallow water, but I’m not prepared to drop $500+ for a fancy gadget in a new hobby.

Is a depth finder worth it?

I’m considering adding a depth finder with GPS to my kayak, but am unsure how much use it will get. I am new to kayak fishing, and have had good success with flounder and reds. I don’t have much interest (for now) in targeting other species, other than crappie once the weather cools down. Will using...

Great advice guys, thanks!

Shrimp_slayer, I’ll PM you when I go again. It’ll likely be a week from this Saturday/Sunday.

Re: New kayaker, could use some help

Stallardjrs, you nailed the biggest change I already planned on making. I hate fishing slack tide, but it beats the hell out of fighting the current. Having never paddled anything in tidal water before, I had no idea just how strong the current could get. Add in the wind, and you could easily get yo...

Re: New kayaker, could use some help

Yes, I was on the south side of the river. I’ve been in the river numerous times on boats, and wouldn’t dream of trying to cross it on my first kayak trip (especially alone lol). I brought along an 8’ garden stake that I had at my house to use as a stake out pole. I did use it through a scupper hole...

New kayaker, could use some help

Hello all, I finally pulled the trigger and bought a kayak after several years of debating with myself. I was very excited to get out, so I took the day off work yesterday to try getting some trout and reds. Launched from the A1A bridge at Mayport and paddled to Chicopit. That’s where my troubles be...
